Amsterdam to Basel
The Rhine River flows from the eastern Swiss Alps to the North Sea coast of the Netherlands and the Moselle, which flows through France, Luxembourg and Germany, is a left tributary of the Rhine, joining it at Koblenz. This tour of incredible beauty begins in the canal city of Amsterdam, bound for the beautiful Swiss city of Basel. The incredible places to be discovered on this route include the Dutch cities of Middelburg and Maastricht; Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges in Belgium; Germany's Black Forest, Heidelberg, Rüdesheim, Bernkastel and Cochem; and at the crossroads of Europe, the French city of Strasbourg in Alsace.

Day 1: Amsterdam (D)
Welcome to Amsterdam, a fascinating and compact city of picturesque canals. You will be met and transferred* on arrival from Amsterdam Airport to your luxury Scenic Tours ‘Space-Ship’ where a warm welcome awaits you from your crew as you board and settle into your cabin. Tonight enjoy a Welcome Reception with your fellow travellers.

Day 2: Amsterdam (FB,L,D)
This morning choose from the following Included SCENIC FREE CHOICE sightseeing options (1) travel to North Holland’s seaside village of Volendam, stopping also in Edam to sample cheese on a local farm; or (2) one of the most common forms of transport in the city, discover Amsterdam as a local on a guided bike tour; or (3) with over 100 kilometres of canals snaking their way through the city, relax on board a sightseeing canal cruise and discover Amsterdam from a different perspective. This evening join your fellow passengers in the Crystal dining room for the Captain’s welcome dinner.
Day 3: Antwerp - Bruges - Antwerp (FB,L,D)
Today’s Included tour takes you to the charming World Heritage City of Bruges. Often referred to as the ‘Venice of the North’, be amazed by this fascinating little city with its pretty canals and intimate cobblestone streets. Encounter traditional lace makers and view the numerous influences over time through varying architectural examples. Upon your return to Antwerp this afternoon, enjoy your choice of the following Included SCENIC FREE CHOICE sightseeing tours (1) continue your discovery of Belgium, a country known for delicacies such as Belgian Beers; Waffles and Chocolate - just to name a few, on guided walking tour followed by time at leisure in Belgium’s second largest city, Antwerp; or (2) join your guide for a journey by bike through Antwerp, this former Cultural Capital of Europe is a city with a difference, where past glory and modern trends happily mingle. Following a delicious evening meal on board your Scenic ‘Space-Ship’ this evening, enjoy a traditional music performance.
Day 4: Middelburg (FB,L,HD)
Upon arrival in Veere, start your day with a short transfer to Middelburg for your choice from the following Included SCENIC FREE CHOICE sightseeing options: (1) visit the Delta Works followed by a guided visit through the Storm Surge Barrier. The Delta Works are an engineering feat consisting of a complex series of dams, purposely built to protect the population on the Delta plain from treacherous floods; or (2) join a guided tour of Middelburg taking in key sites such as the gothic Old City Hall, which today is home to Middelburg University; or (3) with a history stretching back to the 15th century, discover many of the hundreds of heritage buildings on a guided bike tour through the streets of Veere and surrounding area. Day 5: Arnhem (FB,L,D)
One of the Netherlands larger cities, Arnhem is a charming metropolis decorated by a diverse array of architectural styles and known for its lovely parks and greenery. Choose from these Included SCENIC FREE CHOICE sightseeing tours: (1) The lively Dutch city of Nijmegen is considered to be the oldest city in the Netherlands. Enjoy your Included guided city tour before perhaps treating yourself to a spot of shopping or simply exploring the streets at your leisure and soaking up the culture of this charming place; or (2) From Arnhem, visit The Airborne Museum ‘Hartenstein’. The museum pays tribute to The Battle of Arnhem, a crucial part of Operation Market Garden, which took place in September 1944. After heavy fighting the Allied Forces eventually had to withdraw because of the heavy German counterattacks. Arnhem’s crucial role in the last days of WWII was recreated in the movie “A Bridge Too Far”.
Day 6: Maastricht (FB,L,D)
Holland’s oldest fortified city, Maastricht is a short drive from our docking location in Venlo and is a member of the most ancient European towns network and also widely known as a city of history, culture, local folklore and education. A city full of attractions for all, enjoy an Included guided tour this morning before time at leisure ashore in this most appealing city. This afternoon board your luxurious ship for your cruise onto the magnificent Rhine River whose waters will carry you onto Germany.
Day 7: Koblenz (FB,L,D)
What better way to uncover the beauty of Europe than from the opulence of your Scenic ‘Space-Ship’? Enjoy the multitude of facilities on board, all designed to enhance your ultimate holiday experience, or simply relax and let the scenery come to you as you cruise onto Koblenz this evening. Situated on both banks of the Rhine and at its confluence with the Moselle River, discover the beautiful gem that is the 2000 year old town of Koblenz. Perhaps enjoy a moonlit stroll ashore following dinner on board this evening.
Day 8: Cochem (FB,L,D)
A medieval gem resting on the banks of the Moselle River, Cochem will make you feel as if you are stepping directly off the ship and into a fairy tale. Explore the quaint beauty on your Included guided tour of its main sights, culminating in your visit of the spectacular Reichsburg Castle, dating back to around the year 1000 B.C and soaring above the township itself. Uncover your own story of this wondrous town with time at leisure before an afternoon of relaxation on board.
Day 9: Bernkastel (FB,L,D)
This morning step ashore in the well-known picturesque wine growing centre of Bernkastel where you will have the option of the following Included SCENIC FREE CHOICE sightseeing options (1) take a scenic journey to Luxembourg, where sky-piercing steeples plunge to deep river valleys in this most dramatic of European capitals, and enjoy a guided tour followed by free time; or (2) enjoy a guided walking tour of Trier, Germany’s oldest city, located in a picturesque valley encased by low vine-covered sandstone hills; or (3) immerse yourself in the thrilling atmosphere of an old town that is full of history and culture on your guided walking tour of Bernkastel, famous for its medieval square and reputation for great wine.
Day 10: Rüdesheim (FB,L,D)
Be sure to have your camera ready today, as you cruise through the spectacular Rhine Gorge, with its stunning vistas of castles perched above steep vine-covered slopes. Arrive in Rüdesheim and board the ‘Winzerexpress’ mini train for an Included guided visit of the many rooms of the fabulous Siegfried’s Mechanical Musical Instrument Museum. Enjoy your return mini-train ride back to your ship this afternoon for a fabulous evening on board your luxury Scenic ‘Space-Ship’
Day 11: Mannheim (FB,L,HD)
Today choose from one of the following Included SCENIC FREE CHOICE activities: (1) take a guided tour of the romantic and picturesque cityscape of Heidelberg including a visit to the historic Heidelberg Castle and baroque style Old Town; or (2) explore the river-side town of Speyer, one of Germany’s oldest cities, dominated by the Speyer Cathedral before a home hosted visit for some ‘coffee and conversation’ with the locals; or (3) for the speedsters amongst us, visit the Hockenheim Formula 1 track including entrance to the museum and an insider tour of the circuit* (*subject to availability due to race schedule) A leisurely afternoon of sailing will see us arrive into Karlsruhe where a memorable SCENIC ENRICH evening will see you dine within the splendid and renowned Rastatt Palace, dating back to the year 1700 and of exceptional architectural style, followed by an unforgettable concert in a magnificent hall of Rastatt.
Day 12: Strasbourg (FB,L,D)
At the crossroads of Europe we sail into Kehl, located on the German side of the Rhine River with the French city of Strasbourg on the opposite shore. SCENIC FREE CHOICE offers the option of one of the following Included tours for your enjoyment today (1) a walking tour of Strasbourg to explore the lovely canals and half-timbered houses, including the exceptionally lovely historic neighbourhood of La Petite France; or (2) a visit to the stunning Alsace Wine Region of France, a truly memorable experience, we’ll stop in the town of Barr for a visit to a local winery to sample the delicious local wines in an incredibly pretty setting.
Day 13: Black Forest (FB,L,D)
A truly magical experience awaits you today as you step inside the setting of the fable Hansel and Gretel on your tour to the majestic and spectacularly beautiful Black Forest region in Germany. SCENIC ENRICH Start the day with a visit to the amazing Vogtsbauernhof open air museum in the heart of the Black Forest. You will enjoy lunch before a baking demonstration of the world famous Black Forest cake, including a tasting and coffee.This afternoon see the largest Cuckoo Clock followed by a visit to Germany’s highest waterfalls.
Day 14: Basel (FB,L,D)
This morning as you glide along the Rhine River to the Swiss town of Basel, relax on your private balcony or perhaps join your fellow passengers for a 360 degree view of the spectacular scenery that surrounds you from the sun deck. On arrival in Basel, discover on your Included guided tour the striking Town Hall Rathaus and the Marktplatz, with its daily fresh food markets. This evening join your Captain and new found friends for a farewell reception and dinner.
Day 15: Basel - Zurich (FB)
After breakfast this morning it is time to farewell your fellow passengers and disembark the cruise. A Scenic Tours Representative will organise a scheduled transfer to Zurich Airport for your onward or homebound flight. (Please schedule flights departure after midday)
